SC 1 of 7 states to ban buying liquor on Super Bowl Sunday

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WACH) — South Carolina is one of seven states in the United States that does not allow the sale of distilled spirits on Sunday - this means no one in SC will be able to buy spirits on Super Bowl Sunday.

Now in SC, beer and wine retailers are allowed to sell their products every day of the week while spirits retailers and craft distillers are prohibited from doing the same.

Jay Hibbard, Senior Vice President of State Government Relations at the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States says if customers are looking to grab a bottle of their favorite distilled spirits they need to plan ahead.

"In South Carolina, buying distilled spirits bottles on Sunday is prohibited. It’s not fair to put distilled spirits – and consumer choice – on the sidelines when beer and wine sales are allowed seven days a week."

Since 2002, 21 states have passed laws permitting seven-day sales, bringing the total to 43 states.

"Consumer interest in distilled spirits is at an all-time high, as folks are savoring cocktails at home and trading up to higher-end brands. That’s why we’re supporting legislation that would allow South Carolina voters to decide for themselves."
